On March 27th, 2008, Mike "Balu" Regan was arrested in Mexico for possessing marijuana for which he had a prescription through the California Medical Marijuana Program. Without being given access to an attorney or a phone call he was immediately incarcerated in La Mesa Penitentiary, a prison so terrible that even the Mexican Human Rights Commission has called it, "the worst prison in Mexico, and one of the worst in the world." Since then, Mike has been beaten, had bones broken and forced to sign confessions written in spanish (even though he does not speak, read, write or understand Spanish). Mike now sleeps on a dirt floor in a 10 x 14 cell with 27 other prisoners, even though there are plenty of empty cells, and no beds. He has not had access to medical attention, translators, toothbrush, toilet paper or soap. He has, however, had access to a few meals consisting of rice and corn meal. We have created this page to help raise funds for attorney's fees and to keep friends updated as to his current condition. Thus far, we have gathered $1000 to retain an attorney and have been working with the U.S. embassy to fight for Mike's quick and safe release. Feel free to drop a comment, ask a question, or make a donation, in any amount, to help pay for attorney's fees, toothpaste, food, storage of his personal belongings in California, etc. Many of you out there know the generous nature of Mike.
